Recreation Programs
The New Hanover Township Recreation Committee is sponsored and supported by
New Hanover Township and is governed by the Board of Supervisors. The Recreation
Committee is comprised of volunteers who are committed to providing recreational
activities for the residents of the community and also in fostering community
spirit. The costs of the programs are entirely funded from Township funds or are
supplemented by Township funds and are offered to New Hanover Township residents
and to Upper Frederick Township residents whose Township contributes to the cost
of the programs. Volunteers are needed to lighten the load of the committee

welcome your inquiry as to how you could be of assistance.

Township Parks

New Hanover Community Park
The Township Supervisors have been actively pursuing and acquiring open space
and park properties for the welfare and enjoyment of the residents of the
community. Acquisitions have been made possible by expenditures of Township
funds, donations of open space required of developers when subdividing property,
and awarding of grant monies. The parks are open to the public from dawn to
dusk. We ask that you familiarize yourself with the park rules while enjoying
the facility and that you report any suspicious behaviors/actions to the Police
Department. Park reservations can be made by filing an application at the
Township office. Those areas designated as Township parks are as follows:
- New Hanover Community Park
– located at 2766 Gail Drive. This park is approximately 12 acres in area
with an annexed area of an additional 8.4 acres and was the first park
acquired by the Township. The park has a paved (approx. 1/2 mile) walking/
jogging trail around its perimeter. The park has been developed through the efforts of
the volunteers, Township staff, and paid independent contractors. Donations of
time, materials and grant monies have helped make the improvements possible.
The most recent improvements include the roller/deck hockey rink, indoor
public restroom and the pavilion. Other improvements include a basketball
court, softball field, tot lot, Frisbee golf course, improvements to the
community building and paved parking and driveway access stripped for
walking/jogging and biking. This site also hosts the Township annual Fall
Frolic.
- Swamp Creek Park – this
park encompasses approximately 27 acres and is located at 3179 Reifsnyder Road.
The park has a paved one-mile walking/jogging trail around its perimeter with
rest stations at several points along the way. The grassy area of the park is
groomed at all times and frequently enjoyed by model airplane flyers.
Improvements, including the construction of a pavilion, have been made to this
site by the Spring Meadow Radio Control Modelers. Anyone wishing to fly model
airplanes at this site can obtain a permit at the Township office.
- Pleasant Run Park – this
park is located at 600 Schultz Road and is a passive recreation area
containing 11.5 acres of grassy, maintained open space, a parking area and a
pond. Fishing, picnicking, and outdoor sports activities are permitted at this
site. A marriage ceremony took place at this park in September, 2001.
- Deep Creek Park – this park
is located along Pleasant Run Road, often referred to as Deep Creek Road, and
is a passive recreation site boasting a variety of natural species of
vegetation, birds, butterflies, and wildlife. The park is maintained and it is
hopeful that one day will have walking trails and boardwalks with signage
explaining the natural features being observed. Nature walks, bird sighting
and picnicking are appropriate activities for this area.
- Layfield Park – this park
is located along Dotterer Road and also has access to Swamp Pike. It is
currently a passive site and is in its natural state. Currently a master
plan is being prepared by the Layfield Park Advisory Committee; public is
invited to attend all meetings and to offer suggestions and comments.
- Middle Creek Park – this
park is located along Dotterer Road just east of North Charlotte Street. The
park adjoins the site of the YMCA facility and presently contains two
soccer fields and a softball field. The Township is grateful to the Boyertown Soccer Club and the
Pine Forge Athletic Association for their contributions toward the
construction of the fields. The fields will be used by these clubs as well as
be available to the community. Information about the Boyertown Soccer Club can
be found on their website at www.BoyertownSoccer
Club.net.
Fall Frolic
Each year the Township hosts a community day dubbed "The Fall
Frolic". This event is scheduled to take place at the New Hanover Community
Park September 20, 2008 with a rain date of September 21, 2008 from 1:00 PM to
5:00 PM. This event has been very
successful and is offered to the community at minimal costs. Prior year events
included a horse and pony show, pony rides, moon
bounce, pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, fire company demonstrations, music,
clowns, jugglers, golf, bridge walk, story time, games,
prizes, food and a beautiful day spent enjoying the outdoors! Look for more
information in the Township’s newsletter, The Harbinger.
