RECYCLING IN NEW HANOVER TOWNSHIP
Under a Pennsylvania mandate to reduce the amount of trash destined
for landfills, the Township began providing weekly curbside recycling
pickup a number of years ago. To
encourage residential, commercial and institutional recycling, the PA
Department of Environmental Protection established a recycling performance
grant program. Basically, the
greater the recycling percentage (of the total picked up by haulers), the
larger the grant award received by the municipality.
In 2004 New Hanover received over $10,000 based upon a recycling
percentage of just over 11%. As it turns out this is about average statewide.
The ultimate goal set by the state is 35%.
Obviously we have a way to go, but this reasonable goal is
certainly achievable if we all do our part.
Currently, the items listed below can be recycled by way of New
Hanover’s curbside pickup program. Cans, bottles and jars should
be rinsed and newspaper should be bundled or placed in paper bags.
- aluminum cans
- bimetal food cans
- glass jars and bottles (without caps)
- plastics (# 1 and # 2 only)
- newspaper (including inserts)
- other paper (junk mail, regular mail, office paper, etc.)
- chipboard (non-corrugated boxes)
