Board of Supervisors The Board of Supervisors is
the primary governing body for New Hanover. Each member of the five-member board
elected by Township residents. The Board appoints the members of the other advisory
boards.

Township
Manager The manager is responsible for the day to day operations of
the township. The manager directs and coordinates the work of the various departments, but
works closest with the Board of Supervisors, attending all meetings and reporting directly
to them. The manager also prepares and administers the budget.

Administrative
Staff The office staff that runs the daily operations of New Hanover
at the Municipal Building consists of our Office Manager, Finance Officer,
Bookkeeper, and Clerk-Receptionist. These individuals provide residents with assistance in
answering questions, assist with the completion of applications, and performing various
administrative tasks. Township funds are managed by the Finance Director
and
Bookkeeper.

Planning
Commission The Planning Commission is a seven
member Board representing the overall interest of the township in land use matters.
Members review the official Township map, recommend changes to the Zoning Ordinance and
Comprehensive Plan, review all plans for development, and advise the township in regard to
long-range planning. The members act in an advisory capacity to the Board of
Supervisors and are appointed by them.

Zoning Hearing
Board The Zoning Hearing Board is comprised of
five residents, appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The primary purpose of the
Board is to assure the fair and equitable application and administration of the Zoning
Ordinance by hearing appeals on the Zoning Officer's decisions and by granting relief from
the literal interpretation (variance) in certain hardship situations.

Parks and
Recreation The Recreation Committee plans
recreational activities for Township residents. Children's programs include both
summer and winter programs. Adult oriented activities include winter volleyball and
basketball. New members are needed for this important committee. The township
has several areas of open space designated as public recreation parks. The New
Hanover Community Park, was made on 12 acres acquired in 1992, and has a baseball
field,
disc golf, a playground, and basketball courts.

Sewer
Authority The New Hanover Township Authority was formed on December 16, 1971 and was
incorporated in accordance with the Municipal Authorities Act. The five members are
appointed by the Board of Supervisors for staggered five-year terms.

Environmental
Advisory Board This advisory board is
responsible to the Township and the Board of Supervisors for many environmental related
issues. The EAB has advised the Board of Supervisors on the Township's recycling
program, preserving Township wetlands and for providing consumer/ resident education.

Code Enforcement
Officer The Code Enforcement officer enforces
Township Ordinances as well as reviews all applications for building and zoning permits.
Permits are required for all construction, including above ground pools, storage
sheds, and decks. Any change in the use of an existing building, the establishment
of any business or home occupation, or the placement of any sign may require permits.

Shade Tree
Commission Comprised of three
Township residents appointed by the Board of Supervisors and delegated the
authority of control of shade trees within the Township as may be allowed by
authority of the Second Class Township Code including planting, removal,
maintenance and protection of shade trees on public streets and highways.
Township
Consultants The Township Consultants are professionals in their field who work very
closely with the board of supervisors. The Township Solicitor, a law professional,
and the Township Engineer, a professional land and construction engineer, sit with the
Board at their meetings. New Hanover also has professionals as Township Planner,
Township Traffic Engineer, and Township Auditor.

Police
Department The Police Department is committed
to providing for the safety of the community. Along with the many hours spent
patrolling the roadways and neighborhoods, much time is spent responding to emergencies,
preparing reports, working with special agencies, testifying in court, continuing
education, and maintaining physical endurance and proficiency in firearms.

Fire Departments There are two volunteer fire companies
in New Hanover. The New Hanover Township Fire Company is located on Swamp Pike in
the southern part of the township, and the Sassamansville Fire Company is in the northern
section, on Hoffmansville Road. The departments are staffed one hundred percent by
volunteers. There are diversified opportunities for volunteers including, but not
limited to fire suppression, rescue operations, fund raising, and administration.

Public
Works Department This department of dedicated
employees is responsible for maintaining Township roadways and storm sewers and includes
the patching of potholes, tree maintenance, removal of snow, ice, and litter, erecting and
maintaining street and regulatory signs and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and
Township property. This department is also charged with park maintenance.
New Hanover Township is one of the few area townships equipped to
build and pave its own roads. The total mileage of township dedicated roads is over
87.77 miles.
